When was fuel injection invented?

Fuel injection was invented in the early 20th century. The idea was born in 1902 when German engineers Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler developed the first practical fuel injection system. But it wasn't until World War I that fuel injection was first used in aircraft engines. The ability to deliver fuel to the engine precisely improved performance and reliability under extreme conditions making it a big advancement in aviation technology.

Who invented fuel Injection?

While Maybach and Daimler were the early birds, Robert Bosch GmbH was a major player in the development of mechanical fuel injection systems in the 1920s and 1930s. Bosch s innovations laid the foundation for what we have today. By the 1930s fuel injection was used in diesel engines, like those developed by German engineers for the Junkers Jumo aircraft engines.

Early fuel injection

In the mid 20th century fuel injection made its way into motorsport and experimental vehicles. Although groundbreaking fuel injection was expensive and complex and was limited to high performance and niche applications. It wasn't until the 1950s that fuel injection started to appear in production cars.

History of fuel injection systems

The jump from mechanical fuel injection to electronic fuel injection (EFI) was a big deal in automotive engineering. Mechanical systems like those used in aircraft engines relied only on mechanical parts to deliver fuel. EFI systems used electronic sensors and control units to calculate the perfect fuel to air ratio, improved performance and fuel efficiency.

Types of fuel injection systems

Later fuel injection systems evolved into:

  3. Direct Injection: Introduced in the 1990s this system injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber, maximum power and fuel efficiency.

Compared to carburetors fuel injection improved power output, reduced emissions and increased fuel efficiency. The precise delivery made engines more reliable and less prone to failure under varying conditions.

By the 1980s with the advancements in computing power EFI systems became more reliable and affordable. This led to a mass transition from carburetors to fuel injection in passenger cars and the end of the carbureted era.

Today fuel injection is a standard feature in all internal combustion engines. Both gasoline and diesel engines use fuel injection to deliver the right amount of fuel for optimal performance. Modern fuel injection systems work with other technologies like turbochargers and hybrid systems to maximize power and efficiency.
